Oprah Winfrey has often and loudly proclaimed the virtues and glories of wearing the right bra, but a new study states that bras can actually make breasts sag and do little to reduce back pain.
"Medically, physiologically, anatomically, breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity," said Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports science expert from the University of Besançon in France. "On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra."
According to The Local, Professor Rouillon and his team measured the changes in the breasts of 330 women for 15 years, using a simple slide rule and caliper at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire in Besançon, France.
The study suggest that breasts would support themselves better if no bra was used and that bras actually limit the growth of supporting breast tissues.
The study said that women who stopped wearing bras experienced a 7mm lift in their nipples for each year they didn't wear a bra. Researchers also found that bra-less women developed firmer breasts and saw stretch marks fade, reports The Connexion,
"It would be dangerous to advise all women to stop wearing their soutien-gorge as the women involved were not a representative sample of the population," Professor Rouillon told The Connexion.
Professor Rouillon said his study "validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false 'need'," but added that women who have been wearing bras for a long time would not gain any benefit by stopping now.
