A Pittsburgh woman was reportedly fired from her restaurant job after getting a mammogram. Concerned about a lump in her breast, Mercer County resident, Jamie Crytzer, lost her job at the Hickory Grille in Hermitage after scheduling a mammogram, KDKA reports.
The 30-year-old first found a lump in her breast in early May and scheduled a mammogram and an ultrasound two weeks later, according to WKBN. Crytzer said that she had let both the general manager and one of the assistant managers at the restaurant know what was going on, but when an earlier appointment opened up, that’s when problems started to arise.
After asking her manager if she could leave work for an hour when she became aware of the earlier appointment, Crytzer says her manager responded by telling her, “You’re gonna do whatever you want and this is job abandonment.”
Crytzer ultimately made the decision to leave work to have the tests done and then went home. When she arrived for work on Tuesday as scheduled, she found out she had lost her job.
“They felt that I left them with a skeleton shift during lunch,” Crytzer said, “that since they already knew that I had an appointment the following week, they felt I could have waited.”
Hickory Grille released a statement saying they could not comment on the matter, but that they did not commit any offenses.
After contacting the restaurant, WKBN received an email response, which stated: “We can say that all personnel actions taken were in complete accordance with proper personnel management. We want our community to know that we have helped many, many employees through difficult times throughout the years, and will continue to do so. We care deeply for our employees and their families.”
Following her being laid off, the single mother posted to Facebook in hopes of finding support and encouragement from friends, reported WKBN. Her post received over 2,000 shares in less than a day.
Crytzer believes she made the right choice to leave work when she was concerned about her health, but is still looking for a new job to be able to support her son, according to KDKA.
Fortunately, the test results for the lump Crytzer found last month were benign.
