Some able-bodied passengers are using wheelchairs to legally cut through long lines at airport security checkpoints in airports, reports the New York Times.
The scammers are using the 1986 Air Carrier Access Act, which requires airlines to accommodate disabled travelers, who do not have to show any proof of disability.
Evelyn Danquah, an attendant for Delta Air Lines, told the New York Times: "When [travelers] see that the line is so long, they just ask for a wheelchair."
Danquah has seen some wheelchair scammers stand and walk away as soon as they clear security.
Wheelchair attendants have a 'don’t ask, don’t tell' policy regarding the line-hopping strategy in hopes of getting a good tip from the scammers.
These passengers are called “miracle flights," as they use wheelchairs to board, but abandon the wheelchairs when their planes land.
