A Salmonella outbreak from frozen yellowfin tuna, commonly used in sushi, has infected 62 people in 11 states.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the outbreak of Salmonella Paratyphi B variant L(+) tartrate(+) that has reached 11 states, including Arizona, California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Mexico, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Sixty-two people have been infected with zero deaths reported.
The majority of the infected reported eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week before becoming sick.
The outbreak was linked to a catch of frozen yellowfin tuna processed in Indonesia and sold by the Osamu Corporation. AFC Corporation had purchased some of the fish to sell in grocery store sushi.
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Osamu Corporation voluntarily recalled frozen yellowfin tuna meat processed at the Indonesian plant, reports ABC News. AFC has “removed the product from the marketplace and is destroying any remaining product it has.”
The AFC recall was influenced by Minnesota Department of Health Investigators’ discovery of Salmonella from one retail location.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection appear within 12-72 hours after exposure and may include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
The CDC said all cases may not yet have been reported due to the time between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported, an average of 2 to 4 weeks.
