Researchers Say Caffeine Can Decrease Blood Pressure


While many people know coffee has its health benefits, a new study suggests it may have more than we originally thought.

The study, done by the Preventive and Clinical Investigations Center in Paris, shows that moderate caffeine consumption effects blood pressure in a positive way. 

It showed that those who drink four cups of coffee a day might decrease blood pressure, but those who drink more than four cups might see an increase.

It is a surprising find, as many studies previously suggested that people with high blood pressure should avoid caffeine.

In the study, researchers monitored the blood pressure of men and women between the ages of 16 and 95 for a ten year period.

The participants were asked to record their daily coffee and tea intake.

Researchers divided the participants into groups: abstainers, people who drank one to four cups a day, and those who drank more than four a day.

They found that heavy tea drinkers saw the most benefits with lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure readings. Those who drank a lot of tea also had the lowest pulse pressure and heart rate.

It is thought that the flavonoids in tea helped relax blood vessels, but this has not yet been proven.

They found that those who abstained from caffeine had the highest pulse pressure and heart rate.

Researchers say the difference in blood pressure was small, but it was enough to be scientifically significant.

Meanwhile, they say that too much caffeine can cause hypertension and other problems.
