Rep. Randy Neugebauer Admits Shouting "Baby Killer" at Bart Stupak

Rep. Randy Neugebauer admitted he shouted "baby killer" at Rep. Bart Stupak during the health care debate in the House of Representatives Sunday night.

In a statement, Texas Republican said he has apologized to Stupak and that his comment was "inappropriate."

Stupak had earlier agreed to support an amendment in the House bill that included tougher language on restricting federal funding of abortions. He led the group of eight anti-abortion Democrats who announced their support for the $940 billion health bill just hours before the vote, in which the bill was approved 219-212.

Stupak was on the House floor explaining why he would not support the motion to recommit when the "baby killer" comment rang out.

"Last night was the climax of weeks and months of debate on a health care bill that my constituents fear and do not support," Neugebauer said.

"In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase 'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership. While I remain heartbroken over the passage of this bill and the tragic consequences it will have for the unborn, I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself."
