Frito-Lay Issues Recall Citing Salmonella Concerns

Frito-Lay has issued a recall for two particular products, citing contamination concerns.

The voluntary recall was issued on April 21 with a company announcement that appeared on the FDA's website. The recalled products include select Jalapeno Flavored Lay's Kettle Cooked potato chips and select Jalapeno Flavored Miss Vickie's Kettle Cooked potato chips.

The recall comes in light of concerns of the presence of Salmonella in the chips' seasoning. Frito-Lay issued the recall after a supplier recalled the seasoning blend. No Salmonella was found in the seasoning that the supplier provided to Frito-Lay, but the company issued the recall to be on the side of caution.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella causes 1 million foodborne illnesses within the United States each year. These illnesses result in approximately 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths.

Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which begin to occur 12 to 72 hours after infection. Most individuals recover from the illness within four to seven days without hospitalization.

Children are most prone to developing Salmonella, with those under 5 years of age carrying the biggest risk of infection. Those who are most likely to develop severe infections include young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

All sizes of the two products that may be infected with Salmonella have a "guaranteed fresh" date of "JUL 4 or prior" printed on the front of the package. Bags that are part of multipack packages that have a "use by" date of "JUN 20 or prior" are also affected (the individual packages of the affected product will still have a "guaranteed fresh" date of "JUL 4 or prior" printed on their front).

Other types of products included in the following multipack offerings are not being recalled: 12 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Sack, 20 count Frito-Lay Bold Mix Sack, 30 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Tray, 30 count Lay’s Kettle Cooked Multipack Tray, and 32 count Miss Vickie’s Multipack Box.

Other flavors of Lay's Kettle Cooked potato chips and Miss Vickie's potato chips are not being recalled. It is also important to note that Jalapeno Cheddar Flavored Lay’s Kettle Cooked 40% Less Fat potato chips are not included in the recall.

As of the recall's issue date, there have been no reported cases of Salmonella-related illnesses stemming from the consumption of the product. In spite of this, customers who have bought the products affected by the recall are advised not to consume them. The company and the FDA are working together to get the product removed from stores.
