Pregnant Texas Teen Sues Parents to Prevent Coerced Abortion

A pregnant Texas teen is suing her parents to prevent them from coercing her into getting an abortion.

The 16-year-old teen, identified only by her initials R.E.K. because she is still a minor, claims that her parents are strongly pressuring her to abort the 9-week-old fetus by threatening her verbally and physically. The teen claims her lawsuit that, at one point, her mother attempted to slip her an abortion pill.

The teen has been able to get a temporary restraining order against her parents to prevent a forced abortion and is currently living with her paternal grandparents.

R.E.K. is represented by lawyers at the pro-life Texas Center for Defense of Life, who contend that the teen has the right to choose to keep her baby under the provisions of Roe v. Wade.

"We were asking judge to stop them from physically forcing her to have an abortion. She is legally protected, so they cannot drag her to an abortion clinic and force an abortion on our client," said Stephen Casey, the teen’s attorney.

According to the lawsuit, the teen was forced to stay home from school and to get two different jobs when she refused to abort her baby. She reports that her parents have harassed her, the father of the child, and the girl’s paternal grandparents during the ordeal.

She also claims her father threatened, “he was going to force her to have an abortion and that the decision was his, end of story,” according to the text of the lawsuit.

"What Roe established, and the cases after that, was that a minor has an absolutely right to make her choice,” Casey said. “And what's revealing is, a lot of times, when people say, 'I do want to make the choice,' people are shocked when they want to choose to carry the baby."

Another hearing is scheduled for Feb. 15.
