Pregnant Colorado Mom Expecting 7-Pound Baby Surprised By 14-Pound Newborn Girl

A Colorado family was shocked to learn that their new baby weighed nearly 14 pounds.

Alisha Hernandez, of Alamosa in southern Colorado, went into labor Monday and gave birth to Mia Yasmin Garcia by C-section at the San Luis Valley Hospital, the Daily Mail reports.

Hernandez and midwives thought they were going to deliver a 7-pound baby, but when Mia arrived, it was revealed that the newborn tipped the scales at 13 pounds, 13 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.

Dad Francisco Garcia told 9News that the hospital staff also seem surprised.

“They're all shocked that they're seeing a baby like that,” the proud father told the station. “Even in the San Luis Valley, they were like whoa! They opened their eyes like they've never seen a baby like that.”

“The nurse, she was shocked,” he said. “She’s like ‘Come here! Come here! Come here!’ I went and I'm like, what happened? She's like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces.”

Shortly after her birth, Mia was airlifted to a Denver-area hospital after having trouble breathing and suffering from low glucose levels.

She is now doing well and the family hopes to be able to take her home within the next week.

The couple have four other daughters, Britney Gonzalez, Ximena Hernandez, and Yulissa and Yuliana Hernandez. They had been trying to get a boy.

“We never got it. We’re still happy though,” Garcia said. The couple say they are done having children.
