JCPenney recently got into hot water for advertising a girl’s t-shirt (picture below) that says, “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.” The merchandise description read: “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.”
Feminists claimed that the t-shirt was damaging to the self-esteem of girls and pushed the idea that attractive women were not intelligent or should not study.
In response, the JCPenney corporate communications department told the website TheFrisky.com, today, that they have decided to discontinue sale of the shirt in light of the controversy.
In an email, brand communications manager Ann Marie Bishop wrote, “We agree that the ‘Too pretty’ t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message…We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.”
The shirt is no longer on the JCPenney website, but here is a screenshot below.
