Penny Winters, an employee of a Walmart store in Portage, Indiana, has been charged with felony theft for allegedly eating multiple Oreo cookies in the store because she couldn’t afford to pay for them with her Walmart salary.
According to TheSmokingGun.com, Winters was arrested after Walmart Asset Protection Manager Kenneth Moreno told police that the company had reviewed surveillance video after an open bag of Oreo cookies was found in the store.
“Mr Moreno advised that upon back-tracking the video footage from the location in which the wrapper was located, he was able to observe Ms. Winters select the package of cookies, open it, and proceed to consume multiple cookies during her work shift without paying for said items,” the police report said.
Winters allegedly said that she had been eating food from the Portage, Indiana store and her previous job at an Arizona Walmart, over four years, because she couldn't afford to pay for the snacks.
Winters’ son told CBS Chicago that his mother could not afford to pay because she only made a wage of $11.40 an hour after working for Walmart for eight years.
Winters is charged with one count of felony theft and could be sentenced to jail if found guilty.
