Patients Shocked As GOP Starts To Repeal Obamacare

Many people with medical conditions were shocked that Senate Republicans began their first steps to repeal Obamacare during the late-night hours of Jan. 11, a move that could ultimately take away health care coverage for an estimated 20 million Americans.

According to Reuters, the Senate voted 51 to 48 for the House and Senate to write repeal legislation by Jan. 27; the one GOP holdout was Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky.

Republicans insist they want to give states more control over health care. States already decide how much insurance companies can charge people for premiums; Republicans have blamed Obamacare for the increase in premiums.

Senate Republicans used a process called budget reconciliation to push the vote through, which means they don't need the normal 60 votes to overcome a Democratic filibuster. They only need a majority to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

"They want to kill ACA but they have no idea how they are going to bring forth a substitute proposal," said Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

Sanders was not the only person upset. Several people tweeted their outrage and worry over the vote, notes Raw Story:

As a breast cancer survivor, this is a death sentence for me.

[A]s a brain tumor survivor, I have no idea what it will mean for me.

As a Stage 3 cancer survivor I'm ineligible for life insurance and soon won't be able to afford health insurance. Is this how "great" feels?

I have cystic fibrosis. If the ACA is repealed people like me will lose coverage. People like me will die.

As a veteran my health insurance is covered under the ACA.

ACA is not perfect but it saved me & millions of others with pre-existing conditions. Improve it, but don't take it away. Please. #SaveACA.

[M]y dad has cancer (in remission). He had no ins & was denied before ACA. He almost died. ACA literally saved his life. #saveACA.

I have a chronic disease. #SaveACA means I can be self-employed with coverage and schedule work around my illness. Without it? Who knows.

[S]o my pre-x condition of cancer will screw me and a recurrence will kill me... #acaworks.
