Outdoor Urinal In Park Causes Uproar In San Francisco (Video)

San Francisco's Dolores Park reopened in late January, but one of the new features is causing controversy (video below).

San Francisco's park and recreation department built an outdoor urinal because of the health issues caused by people relieving themselves in bushes and on buildings.

"The more options we can give people to relieve themselves the better it is for the park-goers, the better it is for neighbors," San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener told NBC Bay Area.

The open-air urinal is not near the park playground, but six civic groups threatened to sue the city on Feb. 5 if the outdoor facility is not removed within 20 days. The groups claim the outdoor toilet is unsanitary, illegal and discriminatory against women and young girls because it is not designed for females.

“This is more than stunning and disgusting. It's a human regression of mankind,” Frank Lee, of the Pacific Justice Institute, one of the groups that opposes the outdoor toilet, told The Associated Press.

“If this is not stopped, this will become the norm in San Francisco and spread to other cities," Lee added.

Brad Dacus, president of Pacific Justice Institute, said the open-air urinal is a “new low even for San Francisco.”

“It is also blatantly illegal,” Dacus stated. “The city has not even attempted to comply with its own ordinances, much less state or federal law. We intend to hold them accountable. Public urination is bad enough; spending taxpayer money to promote it is indefensible.”

The Pacific Justice Institute is not located in San Francisco. According to its website, it has offices in Sacramento, Santa Ana and Oakland.

The website also says the Pacific Justice Institute fights for "religious freedom including church and private school rights issues, curtailments to evangelism by the government, harassment because of their religious faith, employers attacked for their religious-based policies, students and teachers rights to share their faith at public schools."

The Southern Poverty Law Center has listed the Pacific Justice Institute as an "active anti-LGBT group."
