Family: Nursing Home Overlooked Man's Serious Injury

When a woman went to visit her father, who has Alzheimer's disease, at the nursing home where he lives, she says she found an injury on his heel that staff had not noticed.

Joyce Kring says her stepdaughter paid her husband, Donald Kring, a visit at Signature HealthCARE in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on July 31. She says she found a bad injury on her father's foot, which she says the staff had overlooked.

The family asked for help before deciding to take Donald elsewhere.

“They said they were going to get antibiotics and things but it took forever and we decided to transport them, transport him, to the hospital,” Joyce told WANE.

According to Joyce, doctors said it was almost too late by the time Donald was brought to the hospital. She said her husband "had a very, very bad infection and it could have been detrimental."

Kring's stepdaughter shared a post about the experience on Facebook, describing the poor condition in which she found her father. The post was viewed thousands of times, WANE reports.

Joyce says incidents such as this are part of the difficulty of having a loved one who suffers from Alzheimer's.

"It is very, very hard to put your loved ones into a place and you hope and pray that they will help take care of them," she said.

Signature HealthCARE responded to the incident in a statement posted to its Facebook page:

To our community:

You may have read or seen some negative comments on Facebook recently about our facility. The care of our patients is our top priority, and we regret that our facility has been cast in a negative light.

Please know that we take all concerns to heart, no matter how expressed, even those posted on social media and know that we have already initiated an investigation. So if you read a posting about us, we ask you to please refrain from casting immediate judgement and give us time to respond. We will be transparent in our communications and if we are at fault, we will stand up and own it.

One thing is certain: our staff works hard every day to provide the best care possible, and one unfortunate social media story does not undo the countless hours of loving care that we have provided for our residents.

We will always do our best to take care of our residents and remain committed to improving, always -- everyday, in everything we do.
