Photos: N.J. "Tanning Mom" Patricia Krentcil Now Pale

Patricia Krentcil, the New Jersey mother christened the “Tanning Mom” after being arrested for bringing her five-year-old daughter with her to the tanning salon, has since lightened her mood and her skin. In a recent interview with In Touch magazine, following a one-month tanning hiatus, the 44-year-old reveals a new look – less bronze, less startling and less, as she describes it, normal.

“I feel weird and pale,” Krentcil told In Touch, also pointing out, “Everyone says I look so much better less tan.”

Appearing nearly 10 shades lighter than usual for the cover story, on newsstands now, Krentcil looks appropriately sun-kissed. The Nutley, N.J native was asked to refrain from bronzing specifically for the photo shoot, and described the experience as difficult.

“I’ve had moments where I’ve felt like, ‘I need to be tan,’” she said. “And I did all the spray tans and lotions and creams, too - anything to get dark.”

While she did skip the sun-beds for the project, the golden sensation admits to subscribing to self-tanners due to fears of what losing her dark hues might entail. It’s a self-improvement ritual she claims to have been “born” to do despite the fact she’s been warned otherwise.

“Once a doctor told me to stop tanning. But I didn’t listen to him. I wanted to be dark,” Krentcil said. “I like looking like I just got back from vacation.”

Perhaps Krentcil’s recent brush with the law shook things up a bit for the mother of five. Though she pled not guilty to child endangerment charges, claiming she wasn’t intending to bring her daughter with her to tan, she received scathing criticisms abound for her leathery complexion and treatment of her family. According to, police were called to her daughter's school “after the girl complained of a sunburn,” and the five-year-old apparently told classmates she’d been " tanning with Mommy."

Krentcil maintained that her daughter merely got sunburned playing outside, a fact which the girl's father, Rich Krentcil, affirmed.

"This whole big thing happened, and everyone got involved," he said. "It was 85 degrees outside, she got sunburned. That's it. That's all that happened."

The child was returned to her family following the proceedings, but with the instruction she be monitored by state child welfare workers.

Nevertheless, Patricia’s brief stint in the spotlight led to even more discussion over the depths of excessive tanning, including numerous parodies such as Kristen Wiig’s spoof on “Saturday Night Live” in May.

Patricia told the New York Post she appreciated Wiig’s performance, finding it “hilarious,” but subsequently said in an interview with The Today Show, “I'm sorry, I'm tan. I like to be tan. It just feels good. I really think these moms [criticizing me] need to step off."

According to In Touch, however, Patricia now feels her tanning days are done, adding that she will likely “squeeze a tan in here or there,” but that about does it.

“I am sick of talking about tanning!” Krentcil explains.
