Though the negative health effects associated with excessive drinking are no secret, a new infographic created by Arizona personal trainer Lucas James shows just how much alcohol contributes to weight gain.
According to the chart, the average wine drinker consumes about 2,000 calories per month, or about 141 ice creams a year. In fact, ten percent of the calorie intake for adults who drink consists of alcohol alone.
The infographic explains exactly how many calories and fat the average drinker consumes by comparing certain drinks to physical food. For example, a pina colada has the same amount of calories as one donut and a pint of lager has the same number of calories as a slice of pizza. One spirit and coke is the equivalent of one blueberry muffin and a frozen margarita contains the same number of calories as a cheeseburger.
The chart also details the standard drink allotment a person should have in one day. For women, the chart recommends 5 ounces of wine or 12 ounces of beer, meaning one standard-sized drink; for men, two standard drinks each day.
The chart also explains the process of how alcohol contributes to weight gain by slowing the body’s metabolism.
“The body can’t store alcohol, so it metabolizes right away,” the chart reads. “Since the alcohol becomes a priority in the metabolic process, your body won’t metabolize other fats and sugars as efficiently, ultimately slowing metabolism over time.”
James suggested that instead of drinking a sugary alcoholic beverage, which will pack on the pounds over time, a regular drinker should opt for a light beer or vodka and soda instead. Additionally, extra weight gain can be avoided by eating a balanced meal beforehand instead of snacking on bar foods like nachos or pretzels.
