Mother Wakes Up From Four-Month Coma, Discovers She's Given Birth

A pregnant woman miraculously woke up from a four-month coma to discover that she’d given birth.

Sharista Giles, 20, of Sweetwater, Tennessee, was riding home from a concert last December, when her friend fell asleep at the wheel and the car crashed. Giles suffered severe head trauma and went into a coma. Doctors informed her family that her chances of a complete recovery were less than 10 percent.

“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do,” Sharista's aunt, Beverly Giles, said. “They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She's fought this hard.”

In January, doctors had to deliver the baby prematurely while Giles was in a coma. The baby boy, nicknamed “Baby L,” weighed less than 2 pounds at the time of his birth.

Giles was transferred to a rehabilitation center in March, and on Wednesday doctors called the family to inform them that the young woman was awake.

When her family and friends arrived, Giles blinked and squeezed her relatives’ hands.

“The whole place was packed with family,” Beverly said.

“[Giles' father] showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture,” she added. “When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again.”

The local community has rallied behind Giles and her baby, who is now a healthy 6 pounds, 4 ounces. They set up a GoFundMe page and even booked a fundraising event to help cover medical expenses.

Giles’ prognosis is unknown at the moment, but doctors and family members are hopeful that she will be able to officially meet her newborn son in the near future.
