Mother Of Toddler With Rare Condition Responds To Cyberbullies

The mother of a two-year-old girl with a rare condition spoke out against cyberbullies who turned a Facebook photo of the toddler into the focus of cruel jokes and memes across the Internet.

Summerville, South Carolina, toddler Mariah Anderson was born with Chromosome Two Duplication Syndrome, a rare condition that affects her learning and motor skills. Last week, Mariah’s mother, Kyra Pringle, posted a photo of her daughter on Facebook in celebration of her second birthday, and the photo soon began to spread throughout social media.

Thousands started sharing the photo after it was posted, with many creating memes out of it that included cruel and insensitive captions, while others posted comments making fun of Mariah’s appearance.

“The smile that you guys think is funny or the smile that you guys are comparing to a leprechaun,” Pringle said, addressing the Internet bullies, “the things you guys are saying about my child, she's not a monster, she's real.”

Mariah’s family said that they just want to be able to enjoy the time they have with their beloved little girl, whose life expectancy is reportedly grim.

“If you're out there and you're doing these things, and you think that it's funny, it's not funny,” Mariah’s grandmother, Linda Pringle, said. “This is actually a human being, this is a child, this is a baby.”

“People are going to do what they are going to do,” the girl’s father, David Anderson, added. “The only thing that's bothering me is what's bothering my family.”

Among all of the negativity surrounding Pringle’s special birthday photo, the mother revealed in a Facebook post, there has also been an outpouring of support from those who stand with her against the bullying. “I can't say THANK YOU our community.... I promise this is a trying time for me,” she wrote. “I'm so THANKFUL.”
