A Pennsylvania mother who bought abortion pills online and gave them to her teenage daughter has been sentenced.
Single mother Jennifer Ann Whalen, 39, was sentenced to up to 18 months in prison for the felony offense after pleading guilty. She must also pay a $1,000 fine and perform 40 hours of community service.
Whalen purchased pills that would induce a miscarriage from an online site in Europe for her 16-year-old daughter who wanted to terminate her pregnancy, reports Huffington Post.
The purchase violated a state law that requires abortions to be performed by a physician.
Authorities were informed by Whalen that no local clinic was available to perform an abortion and her daughter did not have insurance to cover a hospital abortion, Yahoo News reports. The closest abortion clinic to the Whalen's home is 74 miles away.
The pills taken by Whalen’s daughter caused her to have severe cramping and bleeding and she was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Whalen’s lawyer, Matthew Bingham Banks, said criminal prosecutions of this kind were uncommon.
