A 32-year-old woman from Shahjahanpur, India, died after doctors reportedly neglected to remove her dead baby’s head from her womb.
Geeta Devi was taken to hospital Saturday after going into labor, Mirror.co.uk reported.
She reportedly was complaining of pains before going to the hospital, according to Daily Mail. However, reports have provided no further details on the complications she allegedly experienced.
“It is the fault of the doctors,” said Devi’s husband, Hemant, 40, according to Mirror.co.uk.
“First they removed the body of my baby -- leaving the head inside -- and then they told us to take my wife to another hospital. They just left us,” he added.
Devi died early Sunday morning after doctors ordered her to be transferred to another facility.
“Eventually, a local nursing home took my baby’s head out of my wife but she died. They could not save her,” Hemant said.
The local authorities have been made aware of the case.
“It is a severe case of negligence and we are investigating the matter,” said Shubhra Saxina, District Magistrate of Shahjahanpur.
“The hospital didn't have sufficient medical arrangements and hence the mother was referred to another hospital,” said K G Yadav, Deputy Superintendent with Shahjahanpur Police.
“The doctors were not capable of handling this tragic situation and it is due to their negligence the infant's head was left inside the mother,” Yadav added.
Yadav noted that once they find out the names of the doctors responsible, action will be taken.
