Almond Milk Great Option for Vegans and Lactose Intolerant

You already know I can’t get me enough Whole Foods Market, even if sometimes my bill makes me do a double-take. (Those four items in my cart add up to how much?!) The place really has it together. The employees are always so friendly and knowledgeable, they have a fantastic variety of organic goodies, the produce is about as fresh as you can get—plus they have free cheese samples (typically how I bribe my husband to go grocery shopping with me). Also, by and large, I’ve been a big fan of Whole Foods’ in-house generic brand called 365 Organic Everyday Value, which is priced lower than most name brands. So when the folks at Whole Foods emailed to say that they were releasing their own brand of soy and almond milk? Ahhh! The milk angels sang.

Because I’ve been on a big almond milk kick lately, I decided to taste-test the refrigerated unsweetened and vanilla varieties instead of the soy. Free of saturated fat and cholesterol, both of Whole Foods Market’s Almond milk contain as much calcium and vitamin D as dairy milk and give you 50 percent of your recommended intake of vitamin E. While I wish almond milk had more protein in general (across the board this is my complaint of all brands), I sure do love the flavor. The vanilla was a perfect after-dinner treat and went so well in hot chocolate (chocolate and almonds, oh yeah!) and in smoothies. I’ve also been dying to try this Almond French Toast. And at just 90 calories per cup, it’s a treat you can feel good about.

Then there’s the unsweetened variety. As someone who doesn’t always want something sweet in her cereal, this was the perfect moo-cow milk replacement, as it’s barely sweet at all and has a pleasant nutty flavor. It’s also great in coffee. The best part? Because there’s no added sugar, it has just 40 calories in 8 ounces. It’s pretty much my new kitchen staple.

What’s your favorite type of milk? Does moo-milk move you? Are you a nutty kinda gal? Or are you super into soy? Take our favorite kind of milk poll! —Jenn
