A mom came under fire from internet commenters after she said that she made brownies for her child's bake sale using her own breast milk.
"I need some advice," said the mom in a Facebook post shared by the group Sanctimommy. "I made brownies for my school bake sale that had breastmilk in them. I didn't have time to run to the store and didn't think it was a big deal (some of those kids could use the nutrition let's be honest). And it wasn't even that much."
"One of the other moms found out and are blowing it way out of proportion," she wrote. "IDK what to do! Any suggestions?"
The Sanctimommy share went viral on social media, racking up over 1,000 shares on Facebook and over 2,000 reactions in about a week.
Some commenters were shocked, and others were angry about the mom's use of breast milk.
"Honestly this is a d*** near criminal offense," wrote one user. "Breast milk, like blood or semen, can carry diseases, which is why legit donation services screen the milk before passing it along to moms and babies."
"And I breastfed both of my kids," the user added. "I love breast milk. I think it's awesome. I even donated milk. But to slip it into baked goods and feed to random kids unbeknownst to them!?"
"A family member works in an ER," wrote another commenter. "A baby came in with altered mental status and they learned that the baby was being breast fed while the mom was doing meth. THIS is why other moms are 'blowing it out of proportion'. They have no clue if breastmilk brownie lady is 1. free of communicable diseases and 2. not taking any legal or illegal substances that could pass into the milk and thus into the brownies."
"How are the other parents supposed to know whether or not her breastmilk is even safe? It's awfully presumptuous to just assume they will be fine with that," added the commenter. "People expect brownies to be baked with cow's milk. If you are feeling really wild maybe some goat's milk. But I have yet to see the Great British Baking Show using any human milk."
"I breastfed for two years and I NEVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED THIS BEING OKAY," wrote another user.
Others made jokes about the story.
"It's like that one time I made lemonade with my urine because I ran out of water and didn't feel like going to the store to get more," joked one user. "I only drink Perrier so they were getting, like, the best urine ever. I don't know why everyone was so mad about it."
Others even wondered why she used milk at all, since brownie recipes often don't call for milk, according to KSAT.
"Unless you can find a brownie recipe that uses milk I'm pretty sure that whole breast milk story you posted is a fake news hoax," said one Twitter user who questioned the post's veracity.
It's not clear if the other parents or the school will take any legal action against the mom.
