A friend of Oscar Pistorius, the paraplegic Olympic track star who was charged last month with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, said in a BBC3 documentary that Pistorius may be on the verge of suicide.
Mike Azzie, or ‘Uncle Mike’ to Pistorius, spoke about his recent conversations with the track star, painting a picture of a man caught in a tragic situation with no way out. The documentary “Oscar Pistorius: What Really Happened?” is set to air on Monday night.
During the interview, Azzie says Pistorius frequently talks about Steenkamp and her family. He also said Pistorius is a ‘broken man,’ dealing with the social and financial fallout of the incident, which has included the selling of Pistorius’ race horses to pay for the escalating legal fees.
"He just always seems to mention Reeva and to ask us to pray for her and her family," Azzie said. "But most of all, you've got to understand that we are there for him and we will always be his friend. He has no confidence in his tone of voice and he is just a man that is almost like someone that is walking around in circles and doesn't know where he is going.
"I would say that, just speaking to him, that he is a broken man and that I would go as far to say that he would be on the verge of suicide. It really worries me."
