Men would have Stopped Newtown Massacre, Charlotte Allen Says

The conservatives really need to blame someone for the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

As previously reported, Republicans like Mike Huckabee and right wing media like Fox News have blamed just about everything and everyone for Friday’s Newtown, Connecticut massacre – from lack of prayer in the classroom and video games to contraception and homosexuals.

The latest outlandish accusation comes from National Review, which, according to, has previously suggested that the school shooting “was the price of the Second Amendment.”

Today, they published a sexist piece written by Charlotte Allen (which you can read here:, an anti-feminist suggesting that the shooting wouldn’t have claimed so many lives if the school had been run by more men.

Allen, apparently unaware that women are capable of handling stressful and heated situations without running to their fainting couch, believes that Sandy Hooks’ “feminized setting” allowed the shooter, Adam Lanza, to kill so many.

Never mind the fact that many of the female teachers died protecting their students. Let’s forget that the female principal was killed while trying to stop Lanza. If only a big, strong man was around, perhaps this atrocious incident wouldn’t have gone so far.

Beyond the fact that she is utterly disrespectful to the murdered and living female staff at Sandy Hook, Allen seems to be stuck in a past decade when women were considered unable to provide even a basic level of defense.

Allen argues, “There didn’t even seem to be a male janitor to heave his bucket at Adam Lanza’s knees.”

Is she seriously arguing that women are incapable of throwing a bucket?

Where she really falls into pathetic stereotypes is when she says, “Think of what Sandy Hook might have been like if a couple of male teachers who had played high-school football, or even some of the huskier 12-year-old boys, had converged on Lanza.”

Football players? Husky boys? Allen, do you truly believe one of the larger 12-year-old boys should have attacked an armed man in order to defend the helpless female staff? Do you automatically assume a man who played football must be capable of “saving” the women and children of Sandy Hook?

This is not World War I. This is not an action film. Men aren’t running off to battle to protect the weak women and children. The women of Sandy Hook acted bravely and heroically. By arguing that more lives could have been saved if men had been around is a slap in the face to those women and to women everywhere. Even sadder is the fact that Allen is a woman; she attacks her own sex and labels them as “weak” and “helpless.”

I have news for you, Allen. Every single woman at Sandy Hook acted bravely. Several of them died protecting their students. Under immense pressure, they kept their students calm. To question the extent of their abilities is incomprehensible.

In a society where women have come so far, people like Allen try to lace them back into corsets, replacing their teacher’s cap, their cop’s badge, their "power suits" with an apron.
