A man in Sweden is dead after undergoing an operation to increase the size of his penis.

The fatal operation was performed at a private plastic surgery clinic in Stockholm, Sweden.

"This is the first described case where a seemingly simple and safe procedure of penis enlargement by autologous fat transfer caused sudden death in a healthy young man," the Journal of Forensic Sciences reported.

The 30-year-old patient, whose only known medical condition was mild asthma, went under the knife to have his penis both elongated and enlarged with fat cells taken from his stomach. After completing the elongation, doctors began work on the enlargement, which involves an injection of two fluid ounces of fat cells into the penis.

Toward the end of the operation, the man's heart rate increased dramatically while his oxygen levels and blood pressure plummeted. Thirty minutes later he went into cardiac arrest. Efforts to revive him in the emergency room were unsuccessful, and within two hours he was dead.

An autopsy showed that the man had no heart defects and was generally healthy. His death was reportedly caused by a pulmonary fat embolism.

"Fat embolism following penile girth enhancement has to our knowledge never been reported before," the Journal of Forensic Sciences study stated. "The method of filling the penis shaft with autologous fat makes it possible to enlarge the erectile tissues of the penis with longlasting effects."

"Penile elongation and enlargement is considered to be a simple and safe procedure and is becoming more in demand every day," it added. "The only complications mentioned are loss of the injected fat tissue and local infection."

However, some medical experts strongly oppose the procedure.

"It's a completely useless procedure that never works and disfigures men, and could kill you," urologist Tobias Kohler of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told BuzzFeed News. "This is the worst case, but there are lots of other horrible consequences, from disfigurement to permanent erectile dysfunction to even worse."

"If you end up with something that nobody recognizes as a penis, that is what we call sub-optimal," he added.

Moreover, a 2017 study done by Translational Andrology and Urology found that "the majority of men seeking penile elongation treatment have a normal penile size, which is functionally adequate for sexual activity and [urination]."

"Men complaining of small penis, despite adequate length, typically suffer from either penile dysmorphophobia disorder (PDD) or small penis anxiety (SPA)," the study went on to state. "In both of these disorders, men consistently underestimate the size of their own penis and overestimate the mean size for other men."
