Infographic Shows Why You May Want To Think Twice Before Ordering A Big Mac

According to a new infographic produced by Fastfood Menu Price, you may want to put down that Big Mac. The graphic breaks down what happens within an hour of eating a McDonald’s Big Mac, and the results may be less than appetizing for some.

Consumers might enjoy the first 10 minutes of eating the 540 calorie burger because it triggers the release of pleasurable neurotransmitters like dopamine, but it’s a downhill slide from there, Science Alert reported.

After 30 minutes, the 970 milligrams of sodium in a Big Mac begins to wreck havoc on the body by inducing dehydration, which can mimic hunger. “Too much intake of sodium makes it hard for your kidneys to eliminate salt. This aggravates the situation: the sodium overdose makes your heart work faster in order to pump blood through your veins,” the infographic reads. “This causes high blood pressure and can ultimately lead to heart diseases and strokes.”

At the 40 minute mark, the consumer loses control of their blood sugar, which makes them crave fast food more. “The first time you consume a high calorie meal, your insulin response can bring down your glucose levels making you want to eat more. The high fructose corn syrup in the Big Mac bun is quickly absorbed by the GI tract, causing insulin spikes and even bigger hunger pangs,” according to the infographic.

Because the Big Mac contains trans fats and a lot of grease, it can take more than three days to digest the entire meal.

“If you want to enjoy a Big Mac, try to keep it an occasional event,” the infographic warns. “The ingredients can cause serious harm to your body, especially when consuming them on a regular basis.”
