Infographic Shows What One Can Of Coke Does To Your Body

An infographic that breaks down what happens to your body when you drink a can of cola is going viral. The graphic, posted in May by The Renegade Pharmacist blog, is detailed but terrifying.

According to the infographic, within the first 10 minutes of drinking a can of Coke, you get 10 teaspoons of sugar, which is more than the recommended intake for an entire day. This much sugar at once should make you vomit, but phosphoric acid mellows out the flavor.

After 20 minutes, your blood sugar spikes, causing your insulin to do the same, so your liver turns as much sugar as possible into fat.

After 40 minutes, the caffeine kicks in all the way, causing alertness and higher blood pressure. Your liver releases more sugar into your bloodstream.

At the 45-minute mark, your body releases dopamine into the brain, which stimulates its pleasure centers, much like heroin.

After 60 minutes, your metabolism surges again when calcium, magnesium and zinc bind together in your lower intestine. The large amounts of sugar and artificial sweetener will soon make you urinate to release the calcium, sodium, electrolytes and water.

After this, you will have a sugar crash, making you irritable and slow from lack of sugar and from losing water and nutrients, which could make you crave more soda.

“The huge sugar hit that your body now needs to deal with uses up valuable nutrient stores such as magnesium and calcium, our biggest stores being in our bones — just think about that for a second,” the infographic creator, Niraj Naik, said, reports the Daily Mail.

This is terrible news for those who enjoy soda regularly. Even worse, Naik is a former pharmacist who has extensive experience with the subject.

Naik specialized at getting his patients off long-term medications. Many of his patients would drink soda daily — some would guzzle up to three cans a day.

“I created my own system to help my patients where I would write little shopping lists for people based on their conditions,” he said. “My first advice to them would be to do a simple swap, replacing (sodas) with water with fresh lemon or lime juice.”
