Indian Doctor Infuses Contact Lenses With 24-Karat Gold (Photos)

Now you can complete a glamorous look with eyes that match your favorite gold necklace or earrings. A doctor in India has made this possible, despite health concerns from officials in the U.S.

Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan, a Mumbai-based doctor, created a line of sparkling gold contact lenses by infusing regular lenses with nano gold particles to create a stunning look. To avoid particles making contact with a person’s eye, an extra layer was added over the gold.

The luxurious 24-karat lenses, which were added to the regular line of eyewear at Shekhar Eye Research India, cost between $15,000 and $18,000. Chawan, who also created lenses infused with diamonds, said the reaction to his invention has been mixed. “Some said it looks scary, but most of the people loved it,” he said.

Some in the U.S. expressed concern over the lenses, saying that bulky extra layer that protects eyes from the gold could potentially be unsafe to customers. The lenses have yet to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
