Singer Amy Winehouse was reportedly consuming alcohol non-stop in the days before her death, and friends feared she would drink herself to death.
According to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror, friends say Winehouse had "hit the self-destruct button" in wild drinking sessions in London.
“She has spent the last seven days on a massive bender and people were saying she’s going to drink herself to death,” a friend told the newspaper.
International Business Times reports Winehouse bought a large quantity of drugs on Friday night, the night before she was found dead in her home. A source told People that the singer bought cocaine, ecstasy, ketamine and possibly heroin.
However, friends think she was done in by one bad pill of ecstasy.
"It was an Ecstasy overdose," a friend said. "She could do cocaine until the cows come home. But this was obviously a dodgy pill."
Another friend said, "There was always a danger of something like this. Her drinking is totally out of control. She's constantly out of control on vodka. She'd drink bottle after bottle and mixing those quantities with drugs is lethal."
Amy's mother Janis said she saw her daughter the day before she died, and she was concerned.
"She seemed out of it. But her passing so suddenly still hasn't hit me," Janis Winehouse said. She added that it was "only a matter of time" before her daughter's drug and alcohol abuse caught up to her.
