Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe is abstaining – from alcoholic substances. In 2009, during the filming of the sixth Harry Potter movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the realisation hit Radcliffe that he was partying a tad too hard.
In an interview with GQ UK, 21-year-old Radcliffe opens up. He says: “I became so reliant on (alcohol) to enjoy stuff. There were a few years there when I was just so enamored with the idea of living some sort of famous person’s lifestyle that really isn’t suited to me.”
It was then that Radliffe made the decision on total abstinence, rather than just curtailing the amount he was drinking.
“As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time — that doesn’t work for me. I do that very unsuccessfully,” he says.
“I’d just rather sit at home and read, or go out to dinner with someone, or talk to someone I love, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh.”
The last of the Harry Potter movies is released on July 15. As to whether he can make the transition from child actor to movie actor, Radcliffe says: “If I can make a career for myself after Potter, and it goes well, and is varied and with longevity, then that puts to bed the ‘child actors argument.’”
