Gina Schindler, Wife of Cop Who Committed Suicide, Claims He was Forced to Have Sex with Supervisor

The wife of a police officer in Queens who committed suicide last year is suing the city and the NYPD claiming her husband’s supervisor forced him to have sex with her in exchange for a good work schedule.

Officer Matthew Schindler, 39, shot and killed himself last year after allegedly attempting to end the affair with his supervisor, Sgt. Christine Hertzel.

Schindler’s wife Gina claims that on Feb. 13, Matthew told Hertzel that he wanted to kill himself over the guilt and asked Hertzel to end the affair. According to the wife, Hertzel allegedly refused, but made the captain aware of Matthew’s suicide threat who also tried to dissuade Matthew from suicide.

The lawsuit Gina filed said Matthew “was made to understand that he would suffer tangible detriment in his job, job assignments, work conditions, and future prospects if he did not submit to the sexual advances and demands of Hertzel.”

It also claims that Matthew “realized and/or believed he could not escape the continuing sexual advances and demands of Hertzel,” which took place from March 2011 until Feb. 13, 2012.

The lawsuit was filed against the city, the NYPD and Hertzel for violating Matthew’s civil rights.
