Gay Teen Darnell Young Brings Stun Gun to School to Fend Off Bullies, Faces Suspension

One Indiana teen’s desperate measure to defend himself against a violent onslaught from homophobic bullies has landed him in hot water.

Darnell “Dynasty” Young, 17, brought a stun gun into school with him at the behest of his mother. According to CNN, Young claims he needed the non-lethal weapon to protect himself from bullies. Administrators at Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, didn’t agree. They are now threatening to suspend Young for violating the school’s weapons policy. Young’s mother Chelisa Grimes says the stun gun was a last resort. She told MSNBC that she reported the hateful bullying more than 10 times to the school district, but received no response. Fearing for her child’s well being, she armed him with the taser.

"I do not promote violence -- not at all -- but what is a parent to do when she has done everything that she felt she was supposed to do ... at the school?" said Grimes. "I did feel like there was nothing else left for me to do, but protect my child."

Young brought the stun gun to school for weeks without having to use it. He kept the weapon concealed in his backpack most of the time. Then, on April 16, six students approached Young at school and started hurling homophobic epithets at him and threatening physical violence. The frightened Young produced his stunner and fired it into the air, scattering the crowd of bullies.

After he fired the shot, school police cuffed Young and took him away. No criminal charges have been filed against the teen, though he still faces school suspension.
