Flu-Proof Your Child This Winter

Hello, New Year! Hello, Flu Season! We all know that the key to preventing the flu is staying germ free by washing your hands (and basically avoiding contact with all humans for the winter months). But let's face it, our kids touch things. Dirty things. So hand washing isn't necessarily going to do the trick. Today, Dr. Robert Sears offers additional tips on how to flu-proof your child this season.

First, make sure your child eats a lot of fruits and vegetables, raw vegetables especially. Fruits, vegetables and berries have a lot of antioxidants, which are natural germ killers. Next, teach kids to wash their hands often: at school, after playing outside, before mealtime, and after they've shared school supplies with another child. Tell them to wash their hands for as long as it takes them to sing their ABCs. Antibacterial solutions and cleansers are good, but really, nothing is better than hot water and soap. The Center for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatricians recommend that people from 6 months to 18 years old get the flu vaccine at the beginning of the flu season. Dr. Sears' number one tip: make sure your pediatrician is giving your child a mercury-free flu vaccine.
