When you think about ways to celebrate Father’s Day, lots of us are likely to think of Dad’s favorite foods, and how we can serve him a huge, heavy breakfast and let him create a perfect butt-groove in his recliner all day. But the fact of the matter is that fathers come in all shapes and sizes. Some dads commit to be fit, but many of our dads aren’t in perfect health—in some cases, they’re far from it—and in that case, there’s a better way to show you care than by handing him snacks and indisputable control of the remote. Why not get him outside for some activity and fresh air?
Active Father’s Day Ideas for Dads of All Fitness Levels
If Dad isn’t the most active dude on the block. Keep it simple—take a family walk or find a lawn game he’ll enjoy, like bocce ball or cornhole. I mean, he’s not going to burn loads of calories doing these easy games, but just being up and moving is definitely an improvement over sitting around and mindlessly munching.
If your father is a little more fit. Think back to activities you enjoyed together when you were a kid. Did he teach you to throw a spiral or pitch a curve ball? Head outside and toss a ball around. Make use of the hoop that’s been in your driveway since middle school and play some one-on-one, or to take it down a notch and go for a game of Pig or Horse. Hitting the batting cages or playing a round of mini-golf is a super fun way to get the entire family, including little ones, out of the house and moving.
If your father is out of town. Now, all of these suggestions leave one potential problem—What if Dad lives far away and you won’t be there on Father’s Day? No problem; you can still be a thoughtful and loving Daddy’s FBG. Is there a golf course he’s always wanted to play? Reserve a tee time for him and a few friends. Or, if he’s still working on his golf or tennis skills, set him up with a lesson or two with the local pro.
