Diarrhea-Causing Illness Closes New Jersey School

William C. McGinnis Middle School in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, will be closed at least until Wednesday

The school was shuttered for cleaning after an unidentified adult was diagnosed with a contagious diarrhea illness, clostridium difficile, last Friday, noted MyCentralJersey.com.

However, if the entire school cannot be cleaned by Wednesday, then the school will remain closed longer.

Derlys Maria Gutierrez, a school board attorney, stated on the school district's website:

This is an update to the status of the McGinnis School cleaning and scheduling. The Board hired a specialized cleaning company last week to commence sanitizing the school. The crew worked over the weekend and will continue to work i n the school. The school district has been informed, however, that the work will not be completed until at least Wednesday, January 14, 2015.

As such, McGinnis School will remain closed until further notice. The company believes that it will be able to finish by the end of the day on Wednesday so that students and staff may return on Thursday. As soon as we have further information we will notify parents, staff and community. If parents have concerns, they are asked to contact the school principal

According to the Centers For Disease Control, clostridium difficile can happen if people take antibiotics for a long time and can be spread from contaminated surfaces. Older people are usually most at risk for this condition.
