Controversial ‘Anna Rexia’ Costume Reappears

The controversial “Anna Rexia” costume has appeared online again, despite being pulled from stores in 2011.

The costume was originally pulled after a Change.org petition criticized it for making light of the eating disorder anorexia nervosa. It now appears on Halloweenparty13.com for $39.99 with the tagline: “You can never be too rich or too thin.”

The outfit features a glitter minidress with a skeleton print, a choker necklace and a measuring tape belt.

"We understand that some people will not find the dark humor funny,” Dreamgirls International, the company that manufactured the costume, wrote in a statement. “While some people may not like a particular costume, it is a matter of taste and personal discretion.”

The company noted that the costume was discontinued in 2007 because of negative press, and that the purchase of leftover units is beyond its control.

Halloweenstore.com has also responded to the backlash on its Facebook page, saying that it did not manufacture the costume but merely sold it as other companies had in the past. However, despite their attempts to seemingly disassociate themselves from blame of selling the costume, it is still available on their website.
