A Colorado woman faces nearly 50 years in prison for allegedly leaving her baby to drown in a bathtub while she was in the next room playing around on Facebook.
According to an affidavit, Shannon Johnson was giving her 13-month old son Joseph a bath on September 20th when she noticed the water level was a bit high. She thought it was safe.
Police say she then left the room and logged onto Facebook, where she checked in with some friends, shared videos and played a game called Cafe World. Johnson said she heard him splashing around, and even went in once to check on him.
But a few minutes later, the splashing stopped. Johnson went in and found Joseph slumped over in the tub. She called 911. Joseph was airlifted to a hospital, but it was too late.
The autopsy listed the causes of death as anoxic brain injury, cardiac arrest and drowning. Medical records also showed that the boy had a seizure several weeks before the drowning.
Johnson reportedly explained herself by telling police that Joseph was an independent baby who wanted to be left alone. She said this wasn't the first time she had done it, despite warnings from her mother that she shouldn't leave him by himself.
Johnson, 34, was arrested earlier this month and charged with recklessly causing the death and child abuse. The charges carry up to 48 years in prison if convicted. She is being held on $100,000 bond.
