Chaz Bono, Cher's transgender son, premiered his autobiographical documentary "Becoming Chaz" at Sundance this week. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, Jennifer Elia.
"Becoming Chaz" details Chaz's female-to-male transition. He reveals almost every aspect of the process onscreen: he has breast removal surgery, considers genital surgery, takes hormone shots, and discusses the psychological impact of becoming a man.
"I've hated my body since puberty," he says in the movie. He adds that he used to pray he'd go to sleep at night and wake up male: "I just knew I wanted to be a boy."
"I wanted to do this because I wanted to help people," Chaz says. "And I knew that...I could put a face on this issue that people just don't understand because it's a hard one to understand. I wanted to be able to change people's hearts and minds on this."
Chaz was born Chastity Bono, the daughter of Cher and Sonny Bono. Cher appears in the documentary, admitting that she was "terrified" to see Chaz after his breast removal, but also saying she thinks Sonny Bono, who died in 1998, would be supportive of his son.
