A carjacker found an unwelcome surprise in the back of his stolen SUV on Tuesday night. You see, along with the car, he also accidentally nabbed himself 8-month-old Ayanna Julbe, who was sleeping in the back seat at the time.
Apparently deciding that he was in a little over his head, the carjacker decided to abandon the car and give himself a good head start before calling police from a payphone in Upper Manhattan. He provided the operator with the location of the car, which was about two miles from the store he originally stole it from.
“There’s a baby in the back seat of the car."
As he made the call, the thief was caught on video wearing a black and white striped shirt, jeans, and a baseball hat. He wasn't hard to find.
The baby's paraents stopped at a Boost Mobile store and the father, Patrick Julbe, 27, got out to look at cell phone cases. His girlfriend, and the mother of the baby, Jennifer Rodriguez stayed behind in the car with Ayanna. According to police reports, Julbe tried to show Rodriguez a case through the window, but she was unable to see and so got out of the car to get a closer look. Seconds later, the thief jumped in the car and took off with Ayanna in back.
The worried parents were “basket cases,” a police officer said. The parents were questioned by the city's child service agency, but will likely not be charged for any wrongdoing.
Ayanna was taken to a nearby hospital for observation, but she was not harmed.
