Canadian Woman Barbara Bienvenue Had Faked Pregnancy Before, Relatives Say

A Quebec woman who devastated her husband by pretending she was pregnant with quintuplets has pulled the same stunt before, her relatives say.

Barbara Bienvenue, 37, had a nasty surprise in store for her expectant husband when they got to the hospital on delivery day: She was not really expecting.

35-year-old Paul Servat had equipped their home’s nursery with five cribs and collected baby supplies through a Facebook page. But his wife was experiencing a false or “phantom” pregnancy — a condition in which the breasts lactate and the belly swells when a woman strongly believes she is pregnant.

"I lost everything, it was my whole life,” Servat told Canadian media.

Now QMI Agency reports that this isn't the first time Bienvenue has lied about her condition. Friends and family told the news agency that she has posed as a cancer patient and mother-to-be in the past.

"This isn't the first time she's done it," said a male relative who asked to remain anonymous. "But honestly, we never would have thought she was sick enough to do it again."

The family was unsurprised when no babies came of Bienvenue’s self-imposed delivery day.

Bienvenue is now in a psychiatric ward.
