A young British woman spent two hours in surgery and got 250 stitches after her vagina “ripped” as she stood over a water jet at a theme park.
Shelby Clarke, now 19, of Manchester, England, was only 14 when the horrific incident happened in October 2009 at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Metro reports.
During a visit with mom Karen, stepdad James and friend Sarah, she spotted what was then the park’s newest attraction, The Spectacular Dancing Water Fountain, which features water jets that shoot out of the ground. The most powerful jet reaches up to 200 feet.
"There were loads of kids running through the water jets so Sarah and I joined in," Clarke said. "It knocked me off my feet and I felt I needed to go to the toilet immediately. But I noticed there was blood everywhere.”
She was rushed to a hospital, where she had to have 250 stitches, both external and internal.
"When I saw what had happened, I was sickened," Karen said. "I was sickened. She was badly injured, literally ripped right across from her bottom to her vagina.”
She adds: “The consultant took me aside and said he thought she might have been raped. I was appalled. By now, Shelby was under anaesthetic so she couldn’t speak up.”
Clarke has since received a five-figure settlement in compensation. But she fears she may never be able to give birth and admits sex with her boyfriend, Danny, can be painful.
“I can enjoy sex but I can’t have it very often — and so then I start to worry that Danny might cheat on me or leave me,” she said.
Clarke told Daily Mail: “I can’t help thinking that if it had been a 2-year-old running through the water, she might have been killed. I wanted to bring the legal action to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
The theme park now makes announcements before a fountain show to remind people not to go through the jets, which are also monitored by the staff.
