A British man who is in jail for raping a woman while he was high on drugs is waiting to find out whether he is now HIV positive. Richard Thomas apparently was aware that the woman was suffering from an illness, but didn’t realize that it was HIV. When the 27-year-old was informed by police about the woman’s condition, he nearly collapsed and demanded to be taken to the hospital for testing.
Thomas was sentenced to five years and four months after admitting to raping the woman at her home in Leigh, Greater Manchester. The judge also ordered that Thomas sign the Sex Offenders Register for life. Thomas let himself into the woman’s home after she had taken a sleeping tablet and began raping her when she was asleep.
“She froze and no words were exchanged. He pulled up his shorts and left,” said prosecutor Harry Pepper. “He was arrested and interviewed and said he had been drinking heavily, taken cocaine and ecstasy and could not recall the incident.”
Virginia Hayton, Thomas’ lawyer, said that her client regrets what he did. “[He] is remorseful and cannot understand why he did it and it is troubling him,” she said.
Thomas should discover whether he has contracted HIV later in the week, BBC reported.
“It is his own fault. If he had not committed this offense he would not have placed himself in this position,” Hayton said.
