Brain-Dead Woman Gives Birth To Son Iver Benson

On Saturday, a brain-dead woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

Shortly after Christmas, Robyn Benson complained of a terrible headache. She sent her husband Dylan to the store to buy some Tylenol. When Dylan returned, he found Robyn unconscious on the ground. She’d suffered a major brain hemorrhage.

Days later, doctors declared Robyn – who was six months pregnant – brain dead.

After seeing that the baby was unharmed, Dylan Benson and doctors decided to keep Robyn on life support until the baby was developed enough to survive outside of Robyn’s womb. On Saturday, 28 weeks into the pregnancy, doctors performed a c-section on Benson and delivered her child.

Dylan Benson is now the father to newborn Iver Cohen Benson. Doctors removed Robyn from life support shortly after she gave birth to Iver. She was declared legally dead the following day.

On Sunday, Dylan posted a message updating friends and family on Iver’s birth and Robyn’s passing.

“It is with a heavy heart but also with extreme proudness that I am posting this update,” he wrote. “On Saturday evening, my beautiful and amazing son, Iver Cohen Benson, was born.”

Benson wrote that his son is “the cutest and most precious person I have ever met,” and added that he expects a “bumpy ride” early on for the prematurely born child.

He followed his kind words to his son by confirming what many knew was soon to happen to Robyn.

“On Sunday, we had to unfortunately say goodbye to the strongest and most wonderful woman I have ever met,” he said. “I miss Robyn more than words can explain.”

Benson received an outpouring of support after his story was reported by media outlets. Touched readers created The Baby Iver Fund on crowd-funding site You Caring, which has raised over $150,000 for Dylan and Iver.

"I feel very, very, incredibly thankful," Benson said. "The message of positivity has been incredible, and it's made it easier to get through these past few weeks. I hope that it makes it so he can have the life he deserves. I want to thank everyone around the world."

Benson knows Robyn would be just as touched as he is to see the support people around the world are showing for Iver.

"She would be very proud of our son," he said. "I think she would be happy that there were so many people all over the world that want to see him healthy and happy.”
