If John Lackey had female fans, he surely doesn't have any after today. In fact, forget about gender. Lackey may not have too many supporters, period.
TMZ.com reports that Boston Red Sox pitcher John Lackey has filed for divorce from his wife Krista, who is in the middle of battling breast cancer. In the divorce papers, Lackey claims "the marriage has become insupportable because of discord or conflict of personalities."
Soon-to-be ex-wife Krista had a double mastectomy back in March and underwent chemotherapy treatment in June.
The Red Sox star chewed out reporters following his team's victory over the New York Yankees, apparently over the divorce news: "Let me tell you the truth. Thirty minutes before the game I got a text message on my cell phone from one of you, somebody in the media, talking about personal stuff. I shouldn't even have to be standing up here dealing with it. I'm sitting here, listening to music. I don't know who got my phone number, but that's over the line."
According to the divorce papers, the couple have a pre-nuptial agreement, which provides for seperate property that Lackey will keep for himself. In December 2009, he signed a five year contract worth $82.5 million.
In February, Lackey revealed that he spent much of his off-season in California so that his wife could get treatment. At the time, he said that she was doing well, but in March, the multi-millionaire said "everything in my life sucks right now."
Lackey has had the worst season of his professional career with a 6.41 earned run average. It is the highest ever for a Red Sox starter who has thrown more than 150 innings in the club's 99-year history.
