Ben Carson Says He'll Help Plan Obamacare Replacement

Former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson announced Nov. 9 that he will help craft the replacement of Obamacare for President-elect Donald Trump.

"I think the replacement obviously must come first and it must be something that is very appealing and easy to understand," Carson told POLITICO. "And then, only then, would you dismantle what’s in place."

Carson also confirmed that he would have a part in designing the new plan: "Yes, of course."

During the same interview, Carson defended Trump: "I think actually a lot of the people who have tried to demonize him will be quite shocked when they see who he really is. He’ll be a very easy person to work with as long as you’re reasonable, as long as you’re fair."

Carson was asked about Trump's campaign promise to assign a special prosecutor to investigate and jail Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

"That certainly should not be the first thing on one’s list," Carson said. "The concept of liberty and justice for all is important. Having standards that apply to everybody in the society obviously is an important thing."

Carson told NBC News in October 2015 that he opposed rape and incest victims having the option of abortion:

Rape and incest, I would not be in favor of killing a baby because the baby came about in that way. And all you have to do is go and look up the many stories of people who have led very useful lives who are the result of rape or incest.

Right Wing Watch notes that several groups that oppose abortion were elated by Trump's victory and planned to roll back women's reproductive rights.

Susan B. Anthony List president Marjorie Dannenfelser stated in an email to supporters:

We took back the White House. Donald Trump has made four key commitments to the Pro-Life Movement, and it falls to us to help him fulfill his promises and secure historic victories for the cause of LIFE...

Our decision to back Trump in the general election has enabled us to elect a pro-life candidate who we believe will enact the most pro-life legislation since Roe v. Wade was decided.

Clarke Forsythe, the acting director of Americans United For Life, said:

Together, we need to repeal and replace Obamacare as it collapses, a landmark anti-life bill that mislabels life-ending drugs as "contraception" and then forces the American people to subsidize them, that weakens the First Amendment Rights of Conscience for those who do not want to participate in the Abortion Industry’s deadly agenda.

Brian Burch of Catholic Vote stated:

While two races remain undecided, Republicans retain control of the United States Senate – with the likelihood of holding a 53-47 majority. This is a huge win for life — and the votes we need to repeal Obamacare and defund Planned Parenthood ... Biggest losers of the night (apart from Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine): ISIS, Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Emily’s List, Hollywood, Jennifer Palmieri, John Podesta, secular elites…
