One father was shocked when a hospital charged him for holding his newborn baby.
“I had to pay $39.35 to hold my baby after he was born," reads the Reddit headline posted alongside an image of the hospital bill, WXIA reports.
Yet the father says he was more amused than upset by the charge, particularly when he noticed how the hospital described it: “Skin to skin after c-sec … 1 … $39.35."
“The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife's neck/chest," the father said, describing what the charge covered. "Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill.”
Many Reddit and Imgur users called the charge ridiculous, but many were also amused at the same time.
"Eventually you'll happily pay $39 to have someone else hold your baby," one user joked.
Momtastic.com editor-in-chief Heather Morgan Shott couldn't find the humor in the situation, however, adding she found the charge horrifying.
“I can’t imagine a world in which that makes sense," says Shott, a mother of two children delivered by C-Section, reports the New York Daily News. "It’s like charging moms for breastfeeding in the hospital. This charge wasn’t on my bill.”
But one Reddit user, a nurse, wasn't as fazed and offered a possible explanation.
“I didn't know that hospitals charged for it, but doing 'skin to skin' in the operating room requires an additional staff member to be present just to watch the baby," the nurse explained. "We used to take all babies to the nursery once the NICU team made sure everything was okay. 'Skin to skin' in the OR is a relatively new thing and requires a second Labor and Delivery RN to come in to the OR and make sure the baby is safe.”
