A baby in Mexico with a tumor in his left eye was left completely blind after a surgeon removed the wrong eye by mistake.

According to reports, 1-year-old Fernando Jonathan Valdez was receiving chemotherapy for a life-threatening tumor in his left eye when doctors realized the treatment was not working. They decided to remove that eye to save the infant’s life.

Much to the horror of the baby’s parents, doctors mistakenly removed his fully functioning right eye instead of the left, leaving him permanently blind, reports the Daily Mail.

“Doctors started to treat him and decided that they were going to remove the left eye when it was not working, but they removed the right one,” the boy’s mother, Maria Marlene Ayala Quijano, said.

“The doctor told us that he had removed the right eye because he had seen a tumor in that eye as well. But we cannot believe a tumor is going to suddenly appear in just a few hours in our son’s good eye, and the left eye, that was supposed to be removed, is still there. The doctor said he wanted to save his life and therefore he decided to remove the right eye.”

The baby’s father, Fernando Valdez Gastelum, reported the incident to police, and the hospital launched an internal investigation. The parents are suing the hospital, High Specialty Mexican Social Security Institute, for medical negligence, reports the Mirror.

“They say that they will look at the eye to check that there was a tumor there, but we plan to get an independent test,” Quijano said. “I feel helpless and angry because my baby does not have a working eye anymore, and nobody can put it back, it was his only healthy eye."

The surgeon who removed the infant’s eye was reportedly suspended from practicing medicine while the investigation takes place.
