Abortion Counselor Films Herself Having Surgical Abortion, Posts Video Online

In an attempt to eliminate some of the stigma surrounding abortions, an abortion counselor filmed herself having the procedure and posted the video on YouTube.

In a Cosmopolitan.com article, Emily Letts, 25, admitted that, although she herself was an abortion counselor, she had not been using any form of birth control when she unintentionally got pregnant in November.

Letts, who works at a women’s center in Cherry Hill, N.J., does not specify if she was in a relationship at the time; she notes that the “guy wasn’t involved” in her decision to terminate her pregnancy.

Because she was only in the first trimester of her pregnancy, Letts could have simply taken an oral abortion pill. However, she decided that she “wanted to do the one that women were more afraid of,” and went in for surgery.

“I wanted to show it wasn’t scary – and that there is such a thing as a positive abortion story,” Letts said. “It’s my story.”

The three-minute YouTube video shows Letts, dressed in a hospital gown, being wheeled into an operating theater, where doctors perform the procedure of removing the embryo from her womb. Having been numbed only by a local anesthetic, she remains awake throughout the video, which is shot from the waist up.

During the procedure, a staff member stands by her bedside and rubs her arm.

When the procedure is over, Letts says, “Yeah, cool, I feel good. I’m done.”

That same positive attitude was still Letts’ reaction a month after the procedure, when she explained that she neither felt like a bad person for having had the procedure, nor did she feel sad.

“I knew that what I was going to do was right – it was right for me and for no one else,” she explained.

The video was uploaded on March 14; since then, it has been watched more than 36,000 times. Having elicited strong reactions from both those who support abortion and those who oppose it, the comments panel on the video has been disabled.

While some grateful women have reached out to Letts, thanking her for sharing her story, others have gone so far as to call her a killer and to tell her she deserves to die.

After her abortion, Letts was fitted with an IUD, a small T-shaped device that is placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

Data from the National Abortion Federation indicates that 1.3 million abortions are performed in the U.S. every year; 88 percent of these are carried out in the first trimester of pregnancy.
