A 70-year-old man who married a 15-year-old girl has divorced his teen bride, reports Catholic.org.
The Saudi Arabian senior claims the girl's family tricked him into paying a $20,000 dowry for the teen, who he thought was 25, but then took their daughter back.
There is no age requirement for marriage in Saudi Arabia, so there have been no criminal charges, but there has been an outcry by Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission.
The commission sent an investigator to the teen bride's home in Al-Hurath village in Jizan province in Saudi Arabia.
Human Rights Commission President Dr. Bandar Alaiban told CNN that a meeting had taken place with the parents, man and the girl: "A divorce has taken place, and the dispute has now been resolved amicably."
Dr. Suhaila Zein al-Abedin, of the Saudi National Association for Human Rights, said: "When you consider the very large difference in age, it looks more like this was not a marriage, but like the girl was sold. The girl's parents need to be held responsible for this."
