According to reports, singer Wyclef Jean is considering running to be the president of Haiti!
Wyclef Jean’s family issued a statement saying the singer is considering throwing his hat into the ring to run for President of his home country. The next election will be held November 28.
“Wyclef’s commitment to his homeland and its youth is boundless,” his family said to Sky News. “And he will remain its greatest supporter regardless of whether he is part of the government moving forward. If and when a decision is made, media will be alerted immediately.”
If Wyclef is serious about running for president of Haiti, he must register in the country before August 7. The current president of Haiti, Rene Preval, will not be able to seek re-election under Haiti’s laws.
The singer would need to prove he has lived in Haiti for five years in a row and has not been a citizen of any other country. Wyclef was born on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, but was raised in Brooklyn.
Wyclef has often reached out to his home country and organized benefit shows to raise money for the country’s earthquake victims.
